Popularly known as the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (MRCS), the post-graduate diploma for specialty surgical training. Promoting through an MRCS examination is a milestone in itself for aspiring surgeons. Today we are here with the MRCS exam pattern to help new medical professionals qualify easily or go prepared.

MRCS Part A Paper Pattern & Tips

To manage your time properly while giving an exam, just reading the study material for Plab won’t be enough. Know what the exam pattern is to take the stress out. It helps you distribute your minutes properly while also allowing you to make a plan for cracking the exam.

  • The examination consists of 2 question papers including paper 1 that has 180 MCQs with 3 hours of completion time and a 10-minute break.
  • Paper 2 has a total of 120 MCQs extended for 2 hours.
  • Both the MRCS exam question papers are constructed in a way that you can only afford to give 1 minute.
  • If you are in doubts about a certain question in the paper, Flag It and Move On. With such a shortage of time, you cannot lose time over something you don’t know. Re-attempt the flagged questions only after you are done with the question you already know.
  • If you have doubts over an answer, pick the most logical or nearest answer since it’s also about attempting all the questions too.
  • Sometimes questions play with the language and we fail to figure that out, Carefully read the questions and never miss words like ‘Unlikely’, ‘Untrue’, or ‘Not’ since they can change the entire meaning of the question.

  • Always take the provided 10-minute break to feel fresh while moving into the second paper. Most students prefer NOT to waste any time and end up exhausted after going through 180 questions. Moreover, they also sit with the same exhaustion in the next MRCS exam paper, which has no breaks in between. We recommend you take the break after completing 90 questions and then continue with a refreshed mind.

  • By the break, we don’t just want you to sit in a corner for 10 minutes. Grab instantly available sugars, glucose, or coffee to help refresh your mind. You can also try a bit of stretching since it’s common to have body stiffness after you sit in the same position for long hours.

  • It’s normal to feel unmotivated and overwhelmed while doing the second paper but when you cannot take time off from an operation theater if you are a surgeon. Similarly, never even think about giving up in the middle of the exam. Attempt all the questions with a positive mindset and approach without unnecessarily wasting your time.
